Registration Interviewers Needed Last year, APEGBC received over 1,000 first time applications for professional engineer or geoscientist registration. APEGBC members play an integral role in the registration process, acting as registration interviewers—this is instrumental in maintaining and upholding the standards of qualification for the engineering and geoscience professions in BC. Currently, APEGBC is in need of professional members (PEng or PGeo) volunteers who would be willing to assist with registration interviews. Interviewers are needed in every discipline and area of expertise. APEGBC’s registration department conducts two types of interviews: “Experience Review” interviews, which are for applicants believed to have completed their experience requirement, but requiring confirmation as to whether they have four years of satisfactory engineering/geoscience experience in accordance with the Satisfactory Engineering/ Geoscience Experience Guideline; and “Looking-to-Exempt” interviews, which are for applicants with an unaccredited degree from outside of Canada, but who have shown they have more than 10 years of experience. The purpose of the latter interview is to review the applicant’s experience to determine whether waiving of the requirement to pass technical examinations is warranted and whether the applicant’s experience fulfills the registration requirements. Interviews are conducted by a panel

composed of two professional members who are in the applicant’s discipline. A staff coordinator will be available to assist if necessary. Potential interviewers should be a professional engineer or geoscientist with 10 or more years of applicable experience since graduation, preferably working at a senior level. The number of interviews a member would be requested to participate in is dependent on the number of requests that APEGBC receives in that particular discipline and area of expertise. Interviews are typically scheduled during office hours and would require approximately one hour of preparation, one hour to conduct the interview, and about half an hour of post-interview discussion. Interviewers are reimbursed for all reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, including a per kilometre rate for travel. As registration interviewers for APEGBC, members would have the opportunity to meet international experts in their fields, as well as experienced individuals who may still be looking to establish themselves in BC. Members are also eligible for continuing professional development credits.
