2011 2012 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Chuck Bailey Skate Park Canopy
North America’s first purpose-built covered skate park is now located adjacent to the recently completed Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre in Surrey City Centre. As part of a new youth park, the free-standing overhead canopy structure covers a 6,800 ft 2 skate park area allowing use in all weather conditions. The cable supported canopy is supported by a series of 46 ft high stayed steel pipe columns. Additional lateral restraint is provided by perimeter glulam beams connected to concrete piers that also form a gateway to the park and provide a visual connection with the adjacent Recreation Centre. Client: City of Surrey. Structural: Bogdonov Pao Associates. Project team: van der Zalm + associates, CEI Architecture, Acumen Engineering. Contractor: Newline Skateparks. Terra Remote Sensing, in collaboration with UVIC, developed an advanced set of GIS data, based on LiDAR, for the City of Victoria. Four departments at the City collaborated on the project, each receiving different datasets. Two datasets stand out as examples of technical advancement in the application of spatial data: 3D buildings incorporating rooftop detail providing slope and aspect, and vegetation polygons with maximum height attributes. The City is using this data in innovative ways. The 3D buildings are being used to support detailed modeling to assess the potential of each rooftop for photovoltaic energy and solar hot- water heating potential. The City is using vegetation polygons to carry out detailed tree inventories in public and private spaces. Understanding of where, how many, and how large individual trees are allows the City to monitor changes in canopy and plan successional plantings to reflect changes in climate.
GIS Data Development for City of Victoria
CalgaryMetals Fire Suppression Calgary Metals had stockpiled 80,000 t of auto shredder residue to a height of 15 m. On April 28, 2012, this pile spontaneously combusted, creating a crisis situation. North Vancouver’s Landfill Fire Control, a landfill fire suppression consultancy in North America was called in. Dr Tony Sperling PEng mobilized immediately, assembling a team of 20 suppression experts from Houston-basedWilliams Fire, Trevita, and Hell Fire. Over a period of 12 hours, Landfill Fire Control developed a plan to contain the fire using oxygen suppression and overhaul methods. Subsequently, working non-stop with the Calgary Fire Department,
under the command of Fire Chief Bruce Burrell, the firefighting team contained the fire in 30 hours, averting an incident that could have resulted in severe air quality impacts in the City of Calgary. The fire was extinguished on May 11.
