. 2013 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
2012
New Afton Copper-Gold Project The New Afton copper-gold project is 10 km west of Kamloops, BC. AMEC provided detailed engineering, procurement, and construction management support for this project. The scope of work included engineering for the process plant, tailings management facilities, ancillaries, and underground infrastructure. More than 25 of AMEC’s BC-registered engineers worked on New Afton, including engineering manager Scott Fulton, P.Eng., process lead Lynton Gormely, P.Eng., FEC, structural lead Terry Shepherd, P.Eng., and electrical lead Ed Chan, P.Eng. The project was commissioned in 2012 and is performing above expectations.
Steveston Interurban Tram Structure The new Steveston Interurban Tram Structure located in Richmond is a museum-like facility that strongly supports the City’s vision to be the most appealing, liveable and well-managed community in Canada. The tram structure, designed as a museum showcase, is the new home for the original Tram Car No. 1220 and enhances interpretive opportunities and public contact, while providing a facility for restoration and maintenance. Significant design features include a post and beam structure with an 8.2 m ceiling height designed for natural ventilation while maintaining museum- quality interior climate control. The architecture utilizes simple, locally available materials similar to those used in Steveston’s original historic buildings and great lengths were taken to preserve the original landscape and rail tracks.
City of Richmond project management team: Martin Younis, Tara Van Voorst Vader, Jim V. Young, P. Eng.
Methanol Purification System A.H. Lundberg Systems has designed and supplied the world’s first pulp mill methanol purification system to the Alberta Pacific pulp mill located at Boyle, Alberta. The modularized system recovers and purifies the methanol from the mill’s foul condensate to generate bio-methanol to a 99.85% purity level. Commercial grade methanol is currently produced from natural gas in countries that are a significant distance from Canadian users. Bio-methanol produced on-site will replace the purchase of fossil fuel-based methanol. Overall, the new system provides energy and environmental conservation in addition to economic benefits. A.H. Lundberg Systems has a patent pending for this innovative process. Owner: Alberta Pacific Forest Industries. Professionals involved: Allan Jensen, P.Eng, Bruce Der, P.Eng.
