Easily Removable Optical Sensing System (EROSS) The easily removable, minimally invasive, wireless Optical Sensing System tracks the continuous position displacement of the three valves in a traditional piston-
valve acoustic trumpet and wirelessly transmits the readings to be used in a wide variety of musical scenarios (i.e., event control, live performance, stage lighting control, audio effects manipulation). The extended control afforded by the EROSS is interwoven with the natural playing gestures of an acoustic trumpet, offering any trumpeter the ability to augment their own existing trumpet without compromising the instrument’s structure or playing technique. Developed by Leonardo Jenkins under supervision of Dr. Peter Driessen, P.Eng., Dr. George Tzanetakis and Dr. Wyatt Page at MISTIC Lab in the University of Victoria, the EROSS seeks to provide a framework for musical human-computer interaction to a broader audience of musicians.
Solar Hot Water Installation Broetje Orchards is one of the largest privately owned orchards in the USA. The Vista Hermosa Foundation, created by the Broetje family, has donated more than $50 million to support rural and agricultural development, education and leadership training in developing countries. In 2013, they will start up a 112-unit farmworker housing complex. Silk Road Solar has designed a preheating system for the domestic hot water used in the complex, which will reduce the utility bills for the workers and reduce the environmental impact. This 72-panel systemwill be the largest solar hot water installation in Washington State. The project will save over 164,000 kWh annually and is expected to pay back in five years, creating a project with social, economic and environmental benefits. The Port Mann/Highway 1 Project involves challenging geotechnical conditions, strict environmental obligations, and constant traffic flow. It includes replacing the Port Mann Bridge across the Fraser River, widening 37 km of highway through the suburbs of Vancouver, reconstructing 11 interchanges, constructing or rehabilitating 42 onshore bridges, and totally rebuilding the complex Cape Horn/Lougheed Highway Interchange. The project also includes construction of the new Fraser Heights Connector to link Highway 1 with the recently completed Golden Ears Crossing and the planned South Fraser Perimeter Road. Owner: Transportation Investment Corporation. Design: H5M, (Hatch Mott MacDonald, MMM Group joint venture). Subconsultants: McElhanney, Urban Systems, ISL Engineering, Brybil Projects, EBA Engineering, PBA Engineering, Thurber Engineering, MEG Consulting, Hatfield Group, Sharp and Diamond, Levelton Consulting, DKLA Landscape Architects, BKL Consulting, ICAD, iTrans Consulting, Terrasol Environment, Infinity Engineering Group.
