INNOVATION July-August 2014
South Arm Community Centre Solar Air Collector This 100-m 2 solar air collector offsets energy use at the community centre by preheating fresh outdoor air. The preheated air is delivered to the building packaged roof-top equipment by a variable air volume delivery system when solar heating is required and available. This project is expected to improve indoor air quality and contribute more than 20 MWh annually towards building energy needs. Owner: City of Richmond; Martin Younis/Levi Higgs (Engineering/project management). Contractor: Jason Dunkley, P.Eng. (Stage 3 Renewables).
Barnston Pump Station This $46.5-million Metro Vancouver-owned pump station will prove to be one of the most significant municipal infrastructure facilities for Metro Vancouver. As one of the largest municipal water pump stations in the province, the Barnston Pump Station will convey water to the District of Maple Ridge, parts of Surrey and the Langley area. This station will service over 2.1 million residents and the installed pumps will have a flow capacity of 11,260 gallons per hour. Construction of this project is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in early 2015. The project is being constructed following LEED principles and will be looking to obtain LEED certification. Some of the sustainable highlights are the building’s green roof, process water cooled pumps, high supplementary cementing materials content concrete and Okanagan-crafted, FSC-certified Glulam roof support beams. Project team: Maple Reinders; Associated Engineer; Kerr Wood Leidal and Metro Vancouver. Light Sheet is a family of closely spaced arrays of white LEDs on a thin, flexible plastic substrate. The flexible nature of the sheet and lack of any heat- sinking requirement eliminate many of the constraints on luminaire design, allowing more freeform shapes and the use of unconventional materials. Light Sheet was launched in Europe in April 2014 at the Light+Building show, with Cooledge-powered luminaires being exhibited by several manufacturers including GE and Ingo Maurer. Paul Palfreyman, P.Eng. (lead product development engineer); Fari Ordubadi, P.Eng. (director of engineering). Light Sheet Cooledge Lighting is a Burnaby-based venture backed start-up focusing on the development of solid state (LED) lighting solutions for the general illumination market. Cooledge launched its product line of flexible LED light sheets at the Lightfair International Tradeshow in April 2013 in Philadelphia, winning the Design Excellence Award.
