Managing Project Costs April 11, 2012 – Vancouver, BC

Call for Presenters Are you an expert in your field who would like to contribute to the future of engineering and geoscience? APEGBC is actively seeking members to present on a variety of topics. The most effective due diligence to OH&S Regulations is the implementation of a discipline specific Safety Management System, an Electrical Safety Program. Get the latest information on the status of effective management of the electrical hazards of arc flash and shock and the implementation of a comprehensive Electrical Safety Program. Google Earth can be a powerful tool for natural resource professionals and technicians. Google Earth is a general purpose tool for viewing, creating, and sharing informa- tion related to earth locations Advanced Google Earth Techniques This seminar will show you how to make better use of your spatial data and documentary photos and to create more professional-looking Google Earth content for your organization or for online publication. The objective is to enable you to do more with your field photos and other geo-data, keep them organized and accessible, and improve their usefulness to your audience. Stormwater Modelling April 24, 2012 – Vancouver, BC This seminar is intended to provide practitioners with the knowledge to help bridge the gap from the rational method into complex computer modelling. Some of the topics discussed will include the evolution of computer model techniques, rainfall data and design storms, runoff calculations and model parameters, hydraulic modelling and model parameters, as well as water qual- ity modelling and its limitations. When is Energized Electrical Work Allowed? April 24, 2012 – Richmond, BC Review the CSA Z462-12, 2nd Edition’s requirements, and discuss electrical hazard analysis methods including the IEEE P1584 Standard. Get the latest information on the status of effective management of the electrical hazards of arc flash and shock and the implications to EPCM Engineering, and engineers working for employers. Electrical Safety Program A to Z April 24, 2012 – Richmond, BC April 23, 2012 – Castlegar, BC April 25, 2012 – Kelowna, BC June 4, 2012 – Prince George, BC

The objective of this seminar is to allow various stakeholders of SCADA systems to learn more about the SCADA systems as a whole so they can have a better understanding of how to access the much needed data. SCADA Connectivity, Data Presentation and IT Support April 18, 2012 – Vancouver, BC April 27, 2012 – Prince George, BC You will learn how various components of SCADA systems interact with one another and how the SCADA data can be optimized and presented to the users inside and outside the control room. Turbomachines in Hydroelectric Plants: Plant Design, Operation, and Operating Diagrams April 19 & 20, 2012 – Vancouver, BC The ability to understand and manage a hydroelectric power plant is a key to operate the plant at optimum conditions, best efficiency, and minimum costs. Specific topics will include a description of typical hydraulic plants and a summary of different types of hydraulic ma- chines. Turbo-machinery applications will be introduced in the context of hydroelectric and pumped storage plants. The main characteristics of plants including the issues of rated head, discharge, speed, type and number of machines will be discussed. Groundwater Resources: Assessment, Monitoring, Modelling and Management in BC April 20, 2012 – Vancouver, BC This seminar is targeted to civil, environmental, municipal and geological engineers, and geoscientists who are interested in learning more about the impor- tance of the groundwater resource, tools used to assess the resource, and the relevant framework for managing this resource in BC. School Seismic Identification Reports (SPIR) April 20, 2012 – Vancouver, BC This workshop is designed to train engineers on the use and application of the Seismic Retrofit Guidelines 1st Edition (SRG1) in order to become familiar with the preparation of Seismic Project Identification Reports (SPIR) when engaged by a school district to seismically upgrade a school. In order for a school district to receive approval from the Ministry of Education to seismically upgrade a school under the Ministry’s Seismic Mitigation Program, a SPIR must be completed by a professional engineer. Intermediate Google Earth Techniques

The subject of managing project costs has always been a challenge, but in our current environment of rapidly escalating costs and competition for scarce resources, it is even more so. This workshop is for technical personnel involved in capital projects. Although we must cover how project cost management systems tie in to corporate accounting systems, it is more about forecasting future costs than recording historical costs. City of Vancouver’s New ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Documentation Process April 11, 2012 – Vancouver, BC On December 1, 2011, the City of Vancouver introduced a new ASHRAE 90.1 documentation process meant to improve building quality assurance, data gathering, and permit process implementation. This new process comes into effect on March 1, 2012. This seminar will demonstrate the new process, and provide a clear understanding of the individual roles and their respec- tive deliverables, allowing design teams to seamlessly incorporate the new process within the building permit application stage of their projects Technical Writing: Solutions for Career Enhancement April 13, 2012 – Vancouver, BC May 25, 2012 – Kelowna, BC Clear and effective written communication is a lifelong skill that is essential for career enhancement and continuous career advancement. Writing without a solid understanding of how to develop concise written com- munication can be challenging and time-consuming. This skill-building seminar will provide practical, simple solutions for how to express your thoughts succinctly in written format and will provide knowledge and tech- niques to enhance this increasingly important skill. Climate Change and Water Management April 17, 2012 – Vancouver, BC This seminar will provide an overview on climate change facts and focus on the important set of feedbacks that may help our understanding of the problem scale. Some practical issues related to climate change and its impact on water resources engineering practice will be addressed. The presentation will focus on two examples of using a systems approach in addressing the practical issues related to climate change and its impact on water resources engineering practice.
