Showcasing Your Pride and Passion

This past March, APEGBC celebrated National Engineering and Geoscience Month (NEGM), which promotes awareness of engineering and geoscience, highlights career choices in these fields and reminds the public of the relevance of engineering and geoscience in everyday life. Highlights included the Drawing Contest, APEGBCWorks Challenge, Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Competitions and the APEGBC Photo Search where we asked participants to show us what they love to do and why they are proud of their profession. The photo search allowed us to visually share how our members make a difference every day, show future engineers and geoscientists the many careers choices available and showcase the pride and passion our members have for their profession.

Brian Counihan, P.Eng. “I am a Senior Bridge Engineer primarily involved in the inspection, structural assessment and rehabilitation of existing bridges. This photo was taken last year during a detailed condition inspection of an 80-year-old timber truss bridge in Kamloops, BC. It was one of the most fun things I have ever done, and I was getting paid to do it!” Nimmi Dhadwal, GIT “I’ve been interested in geology since I was a young girl growing up inWilliams Lake. At New Afton Mine in Kamloops, BC, one of my jobs is to map ore and waste areas and upcoming structures in the underground development.”

Damineh A., P.Eng. “I wanted to be an astronaut since the age of three when I watched the Challenger take- off. At seven, I wanted to be an astronomer to discover a habitable planet, and an engineer to build a spaceship. Today, I am a structures engineer following my dreams.” Steve Carney, P.Eng., PTOE “Here’s a great shot showing the erection of the main girders for the new Port Mann Bridge that I took during a tour of the construction site in January 2012, looking North towards NewWestminster. I was safely behind the camera!” Allan Chan, P.Eng. “I’ve always wanted to help improve society in a safe and efficient way. I’m proud to have the opportunity do that ~1 km underground at New Gold Inc.’s New Afton block cave underground mine in Kamloops, BC!”

Doug Edwards, P.Eng. “I’m working on a CIDA food- for-work program developing irrigation capacity in Tigray, Ethiopia.”

Alyssa M. Kohlman, P.Eng. “I am measuring vibrating wire piezometers at a coal mine in Northern BC after hiking in on snowshoes. I am proud that I can work outside in such a beautiful environment!”

Simon Church, EIT “This is a photo of me doing survey layout on a project in the summer.”

Megan Leslie, P.Eng., FEC “Here I am in a helicopter over Haida Gwaii.”
