Science Games Engage Kids

School kids converged at Science World at TELUS World of Science on March 5 to take part in APEGBC’s 2016 Science Games. The kids explored science through hands-on activities and problem solving. Generous sponsorship by BC Hydro, Fortis BC, Klohn Crippen Berger, Knight Piésold Consulting, Port Metro Vancouver and Stantec helped make the games possible. APEGBC volunteers ran and judged the activities, led by members of the Science Games Steering Committee. GEERing Up UBC Engineering & Science for Kids entertained everyone with a science demonstration. Division 1 teams showcased how today’s coal originated 200- to 145-million years ago, then explored density and propulsion by racing sail boats, and solids, liquids and porosity by creating water filters. Division 2 students showed off their geological- hazard models, devised simplified instructions to mimic computer programs, and created paper rockets to explore aerodynamics, drag and force. A big thank you to teams, volunteers and sponsors for a successful, inspiring Science Games. More information is available at apeg.bc.ca/ science-games.
