2012 BC Building Code Released The Building and Safety Standards Branch of the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines has released the 2012 BC Building Code, the 2012 BC Fire Code and the 2012 BC Plumbing Code. These regulations establish minimum standards for health, safety, accessibility, energy, fire and structural protection of buildings in British Columbia, as well as water efficiency, fire protection of buildings and facilities, and protection of buildings and facilities from water and sewer damage. The new 2012 codes will become effective on December 20, 2012. The 2012 BC Codes use the same objective- based format as the 2006 edition, describing the overall goals that the codes’ provisions are

intended to achieve. All requirements in the codes are linked to one or more main objectives. Geoffrey Auchinleck Recognized With Manning Innovation Award The Manning Innovation Awards were established in 1982 to recognize and encourage innovation in Canada. Administered by the Ernest C Manning Awards Foundation, the awards consist of the $100,000 Encana Principal Award, the $25,000 David E Mitchell Award of Distinction, and two $10,000 Innovation Awards. The awards specifically recognize Canadians who have demonstrated recent innovative talent in developing and successfully marketing a new concept, process or procedure. Geoffrey Auchinleck PEng of Vancouver, BC, has been awarded the $100,000 Encana Principal Award for developing and commercializing a blood transfusion tracking and management system. The BloodTrack® System improves the safety and efficiency of blood transfusions through the computerized tracking of blood bag distribution and crucial details such as how long donor blood may be safely used, blood origin and characteristics. BloodTrack® is now being adopted as the sole blood- management system for two countries and 180 large hospitals throughout the world. In the last 31 years, 250 Canadians have received Manning Innovation Awards and 2,500 have been nominated. For more
