The collective contributions of APEGBC’s Past Presidents were recognized at the Stripped Gear Ceremony on Friday evening. Past Presidents Dr. Margaret Li, P.Eng., FEC; Russ Kinghorn, P.Eng., FEC; Frank Denton, P.Eng., FEC; and outgoing President Dr. Michael Isaacson, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), received medallions in recognition of their service to the association. With 356 guests in attendance and Andy Mill, P.Eng., FEC, returning as emcee, the President’s Awards Gala was the highlight of the conference. APEGBC welcomed the Honourable Amrik Virk, Minister of Advanced Education, who brought greetings on behalf of government. Also in attendance at the gala from government were John Dyble, P.Eng., Deputy Minister to the Premier; Ralph Sultan, P.Eng., and Jordan Sturdy, MLA for West Vancouver–Sea to Sky. Throughout the evening, eight exceptional members were recognized by APEGBC for their outstanding professional, technical, and volunteer contributions to engineering, geoscience, and the community-at-large. Honours were awarded in the categories of Teaching Excellence (Dr. Akram Alfantazi, P.Eng.), Community Service (Jim Jarvis, P.Eng., and Allan Zackodnik, P.Eng.), D. C. Lambert Professional Service (Bernadette Currie, P.Eng.), and Meritorious Achievement (Dr. Ash Parameswaran, P.Eng., and Dr. Alfred Guenkel, P.Eng.). APEGBC’s top honour for a geoscientist, the C. J. Westerman Memorial Award was presented to Dr. Diana Allen, P.Geo., for her outstanding contributions to the geoscience community. Paul Fast, P.Eng., was the recipient of APEGBC’s highest engineering award, the R. A. McLachlan Memorial Award, for his pioneering structural designs. APEGBC’s 94 th Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday, October 26, where incoming President Michael Bapty, P.Eng., FEC, and the 2013/2014 Council were inducted. This year marked the first time APEGBC offered the AGM via live webcast, and 36 members signed in to watch the meeting online (see page 14). Following the AGM, association volunteers were thanked for their dedicated service to APEGBC at the Recognition Luncheon. Project awards were also presented in the categories of Sustainability (RDH Building Engineering Ltd.—see page 24) and Environmental – Design, Construction, and Monitoring (Conestoga-Rovers & Associates—see page 20). The Editorial Board Award was presented to Alina Cheng, P.Eng., for the winning submission “Vancouver’s Pedestrian Safety Study and Action Plan” (see page 15), and the Mentor of the Year Award was presented to Bryan Robinson, P.Eng. (see page 15). Concluding the formal recognition portion of the luncheon, outgoing Councillors Joe Martignago, Mike Wrinch, P.Eng., and Past President Jeff Holm, P.Eng., FEC, were thanked for their terms of service. Outgoing President Dr. Michael Isaacson, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), was acknowledged for his valued contributions and dedication to Council as President for the 2012/2013 term.
