APEGBC Continuing Professional Development Personal Investment. Professional Commitment.
Call for Presenters Are you an expert in your field who would like to contribute to the future of engineering and geoscience? APEGBC is actively seeking members to present on a variety of topics. For more information, please visit apeg.bc.ca/Events/Seminar APEGBC Online Learning Centre The Online Learning Centre features audio recordings of previously held APEGBC seminars, synchronized with PowerPoint. Visit apeg.bc.ca/Professional-Development/ Offerings/Online-and-Distance-Education for a complete listing of sessions available. Failure Mode and E ects Analysis (FMEA) is a key step and common starting point for asset reliability improvement. When combined withWeibull analysis and other tools such as RCM, FMEAs lead to optimized strategies for reducing or eliminating the e ects of failure such as: safety risks, environmental risks, negative business e ects, lost production and consequential damage. This seminar will give participants detailed training on conducting a FMEA as well as an overview of how to transform the FMEA into a strategic plan. Grounding and Shielding in Electronics Instrumentation January 23, 2015 – Vancouver, BC This session is geared towards professionals with a strong interest in grounding and shielding techniques. The engineering professional will be able to address electromagnetic compatibility and grounding problems, and tune the implementation of instrumentation systems such as to improve their immunity to electromagnetic and electrostatic interference. Road to Respect: Path to Profit – Your Road Map to Business January 27, 2015 – Vancouver, BC Respect is not simply the absence of disrespect. Respect is a way of being, a way of interacting, communicating, expressing power, approaching di erence, leading and relating to others. Ideally it should form the foundation from which organization and team culture develops, so that respect becomes“the way it is around here.”Participants will learn: how behaviour shapes culture, which drives performance and pro t; how power is expressed through workplace culture and how power-based behaviours like harassment and bullying create fear-based cultures that sti e success; and how to build a resilient, cohesive and successful team and workplace community with respectful leadership. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Failure Mode and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA): Reliability Boot Camp January 29, 2015 – Vancouver, BC
Navigating Complexity: Going Beyond Systems Thinking January 15, 2015 – Vancouver, BC Engineers are accustomed to applying SystemsThinking as the approach to resolve problems. However, industries such as aviation, energy, retail, government, health care, education, manufacturing, and construction are complex adaptive systems (CAS). Evidence is mounting that SystemsThinking if inappropriately applied in a CAS can lead to unintended negative consequences and project failure. This session will provide an introduction to complexity science and the Cyne n Framework. Also covered is how planning, strategy development, and project management demand a di erent perspective when facing complexity. HEC-RAS River Hydraulics Modeling Seminar January 19 and 20, 2015 – Vancouver, BC This training course is designed for both beginning and experienced hydraulic engineers who wish to learn how to use the newest edition of HEC-RAS to perform river hydraulic modeling. This training course teaches the fundamentals of the HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling. Some knowledge of HEC-RAS is helpful, but not required. Building a Powerful Personal Brand Seminar January 20, 2015 – Vancouver, BC Personal branding is much more than self-promotion: it is all about our ability to maximize and leverage personal assets and experience to create results that exceed client expectations. Most engineers can de ne what they o er in terms of value, expertise and specialized knowledge; the very best function at a higher level and leverage the values and principles that govern their actions to achieve deeper client engagement and trust. This session will provide the tools that are being used by the most successful engineers to develop a powerful brand to achieve greater levels of personal and professional success. Advanced HEC-RAS River Hydraulics Modelling January 21, 2015 – Vancouver, BC This training course begins with an introduction to using the unsteady ow component of HEC-RAS. Additional lectures present unsteady ow theory, steps for developing an unsteady ow simulation, and procedures for creating a stable and calibrated model. Guidance is given for techniques on modeling bridges, dams, spillways, and other storage areas in the unsteady ow environment. Introduction to river water quality analysis modeling is provided. Participants will build on the knowledge and experience acquired during the previous HEC- RAS course and/or during practical work experience. Advanced Sanitary Sewer Modeling and Master Planning Seminar January 22, 2015 – Burnaby, BC Participants will be introduced to advanced topics like Dynamic Simulations, Load Calculation and Allocation, Field Data Monitoring, DryWeather andWetWeather Model Calibration, and Planning System Improvements. To reinforce concepts learned during the course, participants will engage in hands-on EPASWMM tutorials for each section of the training.
Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering December 8 and 9, 2014 – Vancouver, BC
This short course will be of interest to geotechnical, structural, geological, and mining consultants and engineers who wish to gain a basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The course will cover an introduction to local site e ects in earthquakes, soil-structure interaction, liquefaction assessment, seismic slope stability, and seismic design of retaining structures. Guidelines for Professional Services in the Forest Sector December 9, 2014 – Prince George, BC December 12, 2014 – Kamloops, BC This seminar is being delivered by the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC.The Guidelines for Professional Services in the Forest Sector - Forest Roads and the Guidelines for Professional Services in the Forest Sector - Crossings were created through a collaboration of both organizations. They establish standards of professional practice for members of the ABCFP and APEGBC involved in the planning and design of forest roads and forest crossings. AdvancedModeling andWater Master Planning Seminar December 9, 2014 – Vancouver, BC Participants will be introduced to advanced topics like Extended Period Simulations, Water Quality Modeling, Demand Allocation, Model Calibration, and Planning System Improvements. To reinforce concepts learned during the course, participants will engage in hands-on EPANET tutorials for each section of the training. Development of a Business Plan for Engineering Consulting Firms December 9 and 10, 2014 – Vancouver, BC Participants will learn the key principles of writing a business plan for their consulting job and will write their own basic business plan to start consulting for their clients. OQM Certification Training Session December 9, 2014 – Burnaby, BC APEGBC’s Organizational Quality Management (OQM) program has been developed to improve the quality management of professional engineering and geoscience practices at the individual and organizational level. This voluntary program o ers certi cation to participating organizations. Optimization for Engineering Design January 14, 2015 – Vancouver, BC This course covers the concepts of optimization, problem formulation, common optimization types, and solution strategies. It will give a brief introduction to classic gradient- based optimization methods, evolutionary algorithms, and metamodel-based design optimization for problems with lengthy or expensive simulations. The workshop will be augmented with engineering examples. Students will apply Excel solver to solve practical optimization problems, and see demonstrations of Matlab OptimizationToolbox.
