equipped to identify construction methods and sequences that will work better. CONCLUSION With a project of this scale and complexity, we are often focused on our own perspectives and the challenges we face. However, a collaborative group meeting common targets provides an opportunity to share the individual experiences of key players in the project execution team. Doing so develops a mutual understanding and a broader knowledge,

The cable unwinding tool accomplished its required duty. However we learned a great deal about the design of such a piece of equipment by using it on site and getting hands-on with it. In the bridge construction world we get a lot of experience dealing with scaffolds, beams, jacks, and other static devices. But this tool gave us a lesson in dealing with dynamics, while also dealing with the real-world challenges that we often see on the contractors’ side of the industry. This will serve us well in future. RAYAL FORTIN, EIT, SENIOR PROJECT COORDINATOR, GRAHAM INFRASTRUCTURE LP PROJECT ROLE: CONSTRUCTION COORDINATOR The highline access for the bridge dictated a linear install sequence—if a component was brought into position and found to be in conflict with something, construction would be halted until it was remediated. Bridge components were fabricated in all four corners of North America, so ensuring they all arrived on time and would fit together was the biggest challenge for me. Coordinating between the designer and the wire rope supplier, I was able to get an in-depth look at the bridge design process, which brought clarity around analysis parameters, the requirements for high-grade materials, and the rigorous material testing requirements. As I learn more about how bridges and infrastructure are designed, I hope to become more

enabling all to serve the public better in the future. j Ronan Deane, P.Eng., MIEI, is with Graham Infrastructure LP.

The 295 metre bridge officially opened December 15, 2016.
