(LaCas wishes the city had purchased even more buildings—“we had to design and build a 20 metre long concrete flume in one section, which we really didn’t want to do, but the city just didn’t want to knock another building down”—but Fox sees the bright side. One of the businesses left in place, he says, “is going to build a deck out over the creek so people can enjoy it.”) CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES AND RESULTS Phase 1 began in 2012, under the direction of contractor Copcan Civil Ltd., at the more difficult downstream end, because that was the area that was failing most critically. “Which turned out to be the right strategy,” says LaCas. By starting there and pushing into winter to finish, the creek was ready to withstand a storm in June 2013 that dumped 73 millimeters of rain in less than 48 hours—the same storm that triggered catastrophic flooding in Calgary. “The new channel worked as we designed it to do, protecting the public, with a thumbs up from the mayor of Kimberley.”
