MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP HONOURS THE MEMORY OF AN INDIGENOUS STUDENT W hen Brian Nadjiwon first set his sights on a career in geoscience, he probably didn't expect his story would inspire Indigenous students to do the same. Brian was a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, and an IT and geography student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), with a passion for information TARA BUSHMAN

technology and geoscience. Brian faced numerous obstacles growing up as an Indigenous child in foster care but persevered to pursue a fulfilling career and become a lifelong student of science. After Brian unexpectedly passed away in 2020 at the age of 59, his twin brother Brent Nadjiwon and Dr. Leonora King, an instructor at KPU, began raising funds for a scholarship in his name. Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Foundation—an arm’s length charitable organization that provides scholarship funds to engineering and geoscience students in BC—continues their work to honour Brian and support Indigenous students in the field of geoscience.
