Our Year In Review As the regulator for engineers and geoscientists in the province of British Columbia, our primary mandate is to protect the public. We do this by maintaining robust standards for entry to the professions, and through comprehensive regulatory tools that support engineers and geoscientists in meeting professional and ethical obligations. Our Strategic Plan provides direction and focus to our organization’s activities through goals, outcomes and strategies, and guides Council and staff in delivering on our public protection mandate. Each year, we report on our progress through our Annual Report.
Here’s how we’ve advanced our goals and strategies for 2018/2019:
GOAL 1: To Uphold and Protect The Public Interest Through The Regulation of The Professions
As the new Professional Governance Act was introduced, we engaged with government to advance key policy positions, and kept members informed through news articles and webinars. We strengthened organizational governance by establishing a new merit-based process for Council nominations that is compliant with the Professional Governance Act . We hosted 143 Continuing Professional Development sessions and consulted with members on a revised program for professional development. The Advisory Task Force on Corporate Practice completed its evaluation of corporate regulation; Council approved a regulatory model for implementation under the Professional Governance Act . We ensured our regulatory standards were upheld, and closed or resolved a record number of investigation, discipline, and enforcement files. We created new tools to support professional excellence, including guidelines, practice advisories, and practice advice. We improved our application assessment processes, reduced processing times, and enhanced our registration procedures. We put our diversity principles into action by signing on to the Sector Labour Market Partnership Program, and advanced initiatives that support greater diversity in engineering. We established a pilot program to address five key Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in order to build a more inclusive culture and to meet the needs of all British Columbians.
GOAL 2: Establish, Maintain, and Enforce Qualifications and Professional Standards
GOAL 3: To Promote and Protect The Engineering and Geoscience Professions
