Community Service Award • Peter Tassie PEng

Robert Stupka’s career is shaped by his belief that engineers have a duty to be at the forefront in providing solutions to global issues for the betterment of society. As a Sustainable Infrastructure Engineer at Morrison Hershfield, Mr Stupka has demonstrated sound technical skills in the inter-related fields of waste, energy man- agement and urban infrastructure, and has a keen ability for understanding client needs, making him a trusted advisor. His drive for innovation and passion for the environment brought him to the United Nation’s Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009 where he advocated for the role of professional engineers in decision making and leadership on climate change issues. Mr Stupka is actively involved with the association through the Division of Environmental Professionals and as a member of the Climate Change and Adaption Advisory Group. His outstanding work ethic, dedicated professional service and vision for the future of the engineering profes- sion make him an exemplary recipient of the APEGBC Young Professional Award. Dr Millar consistently excels at the art of educating BC’s future engineers as a professor of civil engineering at the University of British Columbia. Fostering a comfortable learning environment that stimulates interaction and encourages questions, Dr Millar is an engaging instructor who strives to continually improve all aspects of his courses. For three years he served as co-director of the UNBC/ UBC Environmental Engineering Program where his leadership was instrumen- tal in the successful development of the accredited program. Well respected by both his students and peers, Dr Millar has been recognized seven years in a row by civil engineering students with the Outstanding Professor Award, and in 2007 he was selected by his peers to receive the UBC Killam Teaching Prize. A caring and dedicated mentor to his students and a committed and innovative leader of curriculum and program enhancements, APEGBC is pleased to present Dr Millar with the Teaching Award of Excellence. The District of Coldstream and surrounding Okanagan Valley have benefited considerably from Peter Tassie’s exemplary service as a community member and retired civil engineer. Using his unique combination of credentials to benefit his community through his volunteer efforts, Mr Tassie has been involved in land development, local government services, community planning, steward- ship of natural resources and chronicling the history of the Okanagan region. He has given selflessly to numerous organizations, including the Rotary Club of Vernon, the Okanagan Historical Society, and as a director on the board of North Okanagan Parks and Natural Area Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving the natural area of the North Okanagan for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Mr Tassie’s outstanding character and breadth of community involve- ment serve as an inspiration to many. APEGBC is pleased to recognize Mr Tassie with the Community Service Award for a professional career founded on commu- nity service and public welfare.
