APEGBC received excellent response to the 2012 Compensation Survey—over 2,400 members from across BC, the rest of Canada and around the world participated to provide valuable information on their compensation and benefits. An examination of base compensation by responsibility point Results of the Member Compensation Survey 2012
Analysis suggests that obtaining registered professional engineer and professional geoscientist status pays. The change in median responsibility level from engineers-in-training to professional engineer increases 85.3% which also correlates to an increase in median base salary of 61.3%. For geoscientists-in-training to professional geoscientist, the change in median responsibility level increases 65.3% with a median base salary increase of 64.6%. While members elsewhere and outside of Canada report the highest compensation levels, members in the East Kootenay region report the highest median base salary in BC. The complete 2012 Report on Members’ Compensation and Benefits will be available on the APEGBC website at www.apeg. bc.ca/compensationsurvey at the beginning of October. It provides a snapshot of engineers’ and geoscientists’ base salary and total professional compensation based on the 1,476 BC participants who provided valid responses to this year’s survey. The information
range for all valid respondents primarily working in BC shows that, on average, the median base salary for these APEGBC members has increased by 2.9% from 2010 to 2012, or 1.45% annually with some categories having seen greater increases, while some experienced decreases. This is 27.1% lower than the average annual Canadian inflation rate of 1.99% for the period July 2010 to July 2012 as reported by the Bank of Canada. The main table provides information on median base salary values by responsibility point range and compares this with the 2010 figures. If you have not already done so, you can determine your own responsibility point value by using APEGBC’s employment responsibility evaluation tool at www.apeg.bc.ca/services/ employmentcentre/employment_evaluation_guide/. The accompanying tables provide median base salary and total annual compensation values by member status and region.
