The principles provide a basis for sound professional judgment to address this element of engineering practice. Adapting to climate change presents beneficial opportunities to save money or avoid unnecessary expenditures, as well as protect public health and safety. One of the most important principles relates to infrastructure owners unwilling to incur the additional expense for adaptation measures to improve resilience. The guideline directs engineers to demonstrate due diligence by disclosing the climate risks and vulnerabilities that require adaptation measures and by documenting this information in appropriate files.

helps the teams of professionals assess vulnerabilities in several related areas, such as planning, operations and maintenance of the infrastructure. Vulnerability assessment is an important step to incorporate climate risk into asset management, as well as planning, design, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure over its entire life cycle. Initially targeted to assess roads, bridges, buildings, and water-resources infrastructure such as drinking water, wastewater, and storm water, the Protocol has since been applied to a wider spectrum of infrastructure, including dams, coastal structures,

Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Assessment

In 2005, Engineers Canada, with support from Natural Resources Canada, created the Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC). In 2008, the committee developed a tool known as the PIEVC Engineering Protocol. The documented procedure guides engineers who work with other professionals to assess the engineering vulnerability of infrastructure to climate impacts at a screening level and to recommend adaptation solutions. As an engineering tool, the Protocol
