2017 President’s Awards Recipients Our annual President’s Awards recognize excellence in professional, technical, and community service by Engineers and Geoscientists BC members. On Friday, October 20, at the President’s Awards Gala, we will honour eight recipients in the following categories: the R.A. McLachlan Memorial Award, the C.J. Westerman Memorial Award, the Meritorious Achievement Award, the D.C. Lambert Professional Service Award, the Young Professional Award, and the Award for Teaching Excellence in Engineering or Geoscience Education.

R.A. MCLACHLAN MEMORIAL AWARD SHANNA KNIGHTS, P.ENG.

Shanna truly embodies a passion for technical achievement and community-minded action. She is a foremost expert on polymer electrolyte fuel cell durability, having authored or co-authored over 110 articles and conference publications in her field, but this profound professional dedication doesn’t stop her from actively supporting her community and volunteering with numerous charitable organizations. Shanna’s professional contributions will have long-term environmental and economic benefits for the rapidly growing cleantech sector in BC. Throughout her career at Ballard, Shanna has undertaken growing leadership roles in the development of core fuel cell technology, and currently acts as Director of Research. She has been granted 13 patents for her innovative discoveries, with another two pending. In support of the profession, Shanna serves as an industry expert on a variety of boards and task-forces. This includes acting as an Industry Reviewer for the US Department of Energy’s Fuel Cell Program Annual Merit Review, and is a member of the External Advisory Council for the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser University.

An active volunteer, Shanna participates in and supports various community activities, such as the TELUS World of Science, HUB cycling, and numerous charitable organizations, including the United Way of the Lower Mainland. For her exceptional technical, professional and community contributions, Engineers and Geoscientists BC is proud to present Shanna Knights with our highest engineering honour, the R.A. McLachlan Memorial Award.

C.J. WESTERMAN MEMORIAL AWARD DR. BRIAN GUY, P.GEO.

Brian is a recognized leader in geoscience and water resources management. Over a 35-year career, he has guided and conducted studies across many economic sectors for governments and industry. His career is a testament to the far-reaching scope of professional geoscience. Brian has emerged as a leader in climate change adaptation and mitigation. At Associated Engineering, he was Vice President and General Manager of the Environmental Division from 2010 to 2015, and led the company’s Climate Change Leadership Team, embedding awareness of risks and opportunities related to climate change. His recent project work included management and technical leadership of the most extensive water supply and demand assessment ever conducted in Western Canada. This project provided the Okanagan with the best water information in the province, and received the BC Water & Waste Association’s Excellence in the Water and Waste Community Award. Brian is also deeply involved in his community. He has volunteered on a variety of

boards, including the Okanagan Science Center, which thrived in the years under his leadership and became a vibrant institution for youth and families. He is passionate about Okanagan water, and is currently Chair of the Okanagan Water Stewardship Council and a member of the Okanagan Basin Water Board. For his leadership in climate change and water resources management, and commitment to advancing public recognition of professional geoscience, Engineers and Geoscientists BC is pleased to present Dr. Brian Guy with our highest award for a geoscientist, the C.J. Westerman Memorial Award.
