Innovation Fall 2024
F or BC communities in flood plain areas, mitigating flood damage and risk is vital, especially as climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense flooding. It’s especially important in areas of extensive logging, which can affect the magnitude and frequency of the potential hazards. In approaching how to lower hazard impacts in logging areas, analysis may involve using deterministic and probabilistic methods. Currently, the deterministic method, which takes a cause-and-effect-type approach, is the commonly used approach. The deterministic method looks at identifying hazards and vulnerabilities and developing mitigation strategies. However, this method does not incorporate elements of risk, as the probabilistic methods does. The probabilistic method takes into account specific risk factors, such as those amplified by climate change.
