Innovation Fall 2025
I n order to improve traffic flow, the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) pitched a reconfiguration of the approach to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in North Vancouver. The idea was to have a lane dedicated to local traffic turned into a lane shared for bridge traffic. However, community members were upset as local traffic would lose a dedicated lane, making rush-hour commuting a nightmare for those heading east toward Deep Cove. “The Main/Mountain intersection experiences congestion during peak periods that often results in driver frustration,” MOTT explained in a statement to Innovation magazine. “The lane changes were designed to reduce congestion at the intersection while prioritizing transit but were not intended to resolve the limited capacity.” Facing mounting public pressure, MOTT announced it would be pausing the lane reconfiguration project and would revisit the issue the following spring.
