What value or professional growth do you get being a speaker at CE events?

What was a memorable experience from one of your presentations?

Even when addressing professional audiences such as EGBC members, I’ve occasionally encountered advocates passionately opposed to the topics I bring to the table, particularly related to oil and gas development. There have been a couple of talks where other audience members have had to intervene to get the session back on track.

CE speakers are held to very high standards, particularly as they are addressing highly knowledgeable and technically sophisticated audiences. I have to work hard on research and presentation to communicate information of value, and developing these skills is important to my professional growth. Do you hope your example of being a CE speaker will encourage other registrants to participate? Absolutely – I hope that other registrants will appreciate the value that CE speakers bring to Engineers and Geoscientists BC, and will be encouraged to share their own experiences and findings. Q

What advice would you give to someone new to giving CE presentations?

Put a lot of thought into your research and your messages to ensure that you’re speaking with knowledge and authority, and that you’re representing issues fairly and accurately. It can be a tough crowd!
