The survey results for geoscience were also consistent with previous years. The public’s understanding of geoscientists’ roles remained lower than the engineering profession at 31 percent. There was a marginal improvement of awareness from the 2025 survey (29 percent). This year, the trust score remained generally steady for geoscientists at 55 percent (similar to its 2025 score at 56 percent). Over the past half-decade, the public’s trust for geoscientists has remained between 55 percent and 60 percent. The most common description of a geoscientist’s role (cited by 33 percent) was that it was related to geology and the study of the earth. While some respondents also associate the profession with analyzing rock and soil samples and ensuring ground stability for safe construction, 22 percent (up from 18 percent in 2025) of respondents who are familiar with geoscientists are still unable to clearly describe what the profession entails. Addressing public awareness Recognizing a high percentage of the public is not aware of Engineers and Geoscience BC’s regulatory role, the organization ran a pilot public awareness advertising campaign overlapping the survey period. The campaign, which ran from May 1 to 31, highlighted the message: “a safe today and a strong tomorrow” and focused on the importance of the professions.
