Strategic advantage for employers While the AEP is often framed as a registrant-focused program, employers also see measurable benefits, particularly in recruitment, retention, and workforce development. “You can lay out the plan, and at the end of this roadmap, you have your P.Geo.,” Hutter says. “That’s a big benefit to prospective employees.” That clarity can make a significant difference in attracting talent. “It definitely helps attract… talented individuals who are fresh out of school,” Fogg says. Over time, the benefits extend beyond recruitment. Organizations gain “a professional that has experience in their own company’s internal workflows, ready to hit the ground running,” Hutter notes. For some employers, particularly in the public sector, there are also operational advantages. “Having more designated professionals on staff can help in those cost saving ways,” Fogg says, pointing to reduced reliance on external consultants and the ability to perform long-term succession planning. Getting the most out of the AEP While the program provides structure, participants stress that success still depends on individual engagement. “Stay on top of competencies, and fill them out as you go,” Hutter advises other prospective AEP participants. Keeping competency records current also helps identify experience gaps early, enabling GITs to “more easily … get on to these other projects [to fill those gaps].”
