Some municipalities are exploiting available technology to manage transportation systems, making them safer and more efficient. Regent Ma, EIT, and his colleagues can do plenty from the City of Surrey’s Traffic Management Centre: view any of its 450 networked cameras, control traffic lights, send Twitter alerts about congestion, and gather anonymous travel data from vehicles with Bluetooth devices. Connected vehicles could soon become a reality, which could add a range of optimization and safety options.
