Then and Now Photo Gallery National Engineering and Geoscience Month during March is an opportunity to make young people aware of the rewarding and fulfilling careers there are to be had in the sciences. We asked APEGBC members to show us how they were inspired as children to choose a career in engineering or geoscience.
Wayne Williams , P.Eng., Age:12 Professional Specialty: Aerospace
“For some reason, I have always been interested in aviation. It’s not just a career, it’s a passion. In this old photo, the airplane ended up nailed to the top of a large fence post and could be pivoted and tilted to simulate a flying experience. “In the second photo, my son (also a P.Eng.) and I were technical consultants for the flight testing of an unmanned aircraft last summer in Southern Alberta. Kelly has a lot of experience designing, building and flying small jet aircraft. It’s a very proud moment for a father. Events like this create wonderful lifetime memories.”
NOW THEN
Aaron Gillrie , P.Eng. , Age: 5 Professional Specialty: Forensics “My interest in science was developed by my parents, as a kid and through to my career these days.”
NOW THEN
Donna Howes , P.Eng., Age: 10 Professional Specialty: Transportation
“The older photo is of me, age 10, looking at a plan with my dad, who is also a civil engineer. My dad was a big inspiration to me with my engineering and he quietly guided me into choosing that as a career.”
NOW THEN
Spring MacAskill , GIT Professional Specialty: Geology / Environmental Science “The younger one is of me panning for minerals. The current photo is of me developing a monitoring well we had installed that day.”
NOW THEN
Greg Cavana , EIT, Age: 8 Professional Specialty: Aerospace “I’ve been interested in airplanes since I was really young. The photo
of a young me was taken at the Quinte International Air Show at CFB Trenton in Ontario. And now I get to work with Flightcraft’s Boeing 727.”
