Key take-aways for BC from the Türkiye reconnaissance team

Information on this page is collected from the October 13, 2023 seminar: UBC Engineering: Insights from Türkiye Earthquake Implications for Canada’s Disaster Preparedness .

Preparedness ‣ Make good development and land-use decisions. ‣ Prioritize social support for communities. ‣ Educate engineers, contractors, and municipalities about seismic design and construction. ‣ Increase quality control of materials and processes. ‣ Ensure infrastructure can withstand and perform after the earthquake so people and resources can move in and out. ‣ Train locals to respond and participate in search and rescue, first aid and post-disaster building assessments. ‣ Designate sister communities considering geographical distance, population size, and disaster risks. ‣ Conduct risk analyses and post earthquake predictions to inform response and/or retrofit priorities. Resources Engineers and Geoscientists BC has professional practice guidelines that outline expectations and obligations for engineering and geoscience professionals doing seismic design. These guidelines are on the Engineers and Geoscientists BC website ( egbc.ca/Practice Resources/Individual-Practice/ Guidelines-Advisories ):

By the numbers Social and economic effects of Türkiye’s February 6, 2023, earthquake: ‣ 11 major city centres affected. ‣ 14 million people affected. ‣ 50,783 died. ‣ 115,353 injured. ‣ 58,039 collapsed or urgently demolished buildings. ‣ 205,534 severely damaged buildings. ‣ $76.6 billion housing sector impact. ‣ $17.3 billion deconstruction sector impact. ‣ $15.8 billion private industries impact (including manufacturing, energy, communications, tourism, healthcare, education sectors). ‣ $137.9 billion total economic loss (about 9% of GDP of Türkiye in 2023).
