DISCIPLINE AND ENFORCEMENT
DISCIPLINE NOTICE: EERIK MATTHEW LILLES, P.ENG.
In a November 20, 2025, Consent Order, Eerik Matthew Lilles, P.Eng., admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct in relation to the engineering services he provided for an onsite sewerage system for a residential property in Smithers, BC. As of December 1, 2025, Mr. Lilles’ registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is suspended for three months. Between 2017 and 2019, Mr. Lilles provided engineering services in relation to an existing onsite sewerage system and in relation to the design, construction and repair of a new onsite sewerage system, both located on a residential property in Smithers, BC. Mr. Lilles did not conduct an adequate site and soil evaluation or ensure that an adequate site and soil evaluation was conducted at the property in relation to the original system or to support the design of the new system. In the Consent Order, Mr. Lilles admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct relating to the property, and agreed that, among other things, he: • authenticated a letter to the property owners opining that the original system did not pose an immediate environmental or health risk without documenting or recording the basis for or reasons in support of that opinion; • failed to conduct an adequate investigation in relation to the original system by not estimating the volume of pumped flow from the septic tank to the dispersal field in order to understand the loading on the original system. • failed to design and ensure that the new system was constructed, installed and/or commissioned in a manner consistent with the Sewerage System Practice Manual Version 3 (SPM); • failed to file information with Northern Health Authority as required by the SPM and the Sewerage System Regulation or inform Northern Health Authority of a potential health hazard caused by the new system despite there being circumstances indicating a potential health hazard caused by the new system; and
• failed to document field reviews of the new system or create and maintain adequate project documentation in relation to the design and installation of the new system. As outlined in the Consent Order, prior to the end of his suspension, Mr. Lilles must complete the Professional Engineering and Geoscientists Practice in BC online seminar, an Engineers and Geoscientists BC webinar, a Professional Practice Guideline on Onsite Sewerage Systems, as well as three educational courses offered by EQUP Training. Twelve months after the conclusion of the suspension period, Mr. Lilles must undergo a practice review conducted by the Audit and Practice Review Committee. Mr. Lilles paid $18,500 towards the legal and investigative costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
