Innovation Summer 2025

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS | 2024-2025

CAGBC Zero Carbon-certified aquatic centre. This achievement is made possible by its innovative all electric heat pump HVAC system, which recovers heat from dehumidification and cooling processes to heat pools, domestic hot water, and other spaces. A rooftop photovoltaic array generates on-site electricity, offsetting carbon emissions from this typically energy intensive building type. Additionally, the facility uses a gravity-fed drum filtration system – the first use of its kind in Canada – that ensures exceptional indoor air quality while significantly reducing pump energy consumption. This project demonstrates environmental stewardship and public safety by prioritizing energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and a healthier, sustainable community environment. HOMALCO FIRST NATION GEOMORPHIC THREATS MAPPING Large (>106 m³) landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) represent an extreme hazard in high mountain environments. These hazards are increasing due to anthropogenic climate change and rapid glacier retreat. Within Homalco First Nation territory, the 2022 Elliot Lake landslide-induced outburst flood destroyed forest resources and fish habitat in the Southgate River, a tributary of Bute Inlet, BC. On behalf of Homalco, and aided by Hakai Institute, Pierre Friele, P.Geo., conducted a georisk assessment encompassing 10,000 km² over 4 major watersheds feeding the head of Bute Inlet. Landslide threats were identified, and over 200 alpine lakes were ranked for their GLOF hazard. The results of the study will allow Homalco to operate with a better understanding of the georisks within its tribal territory, increasing safety and reducing risk to existing and proposed infrastructure.
