EMERGENCY POWER AND COOLING UPGRADES

TELUS has continued with critical infrastructure improvements at its main telecommunications facility in downtown Vancouver. Upgrades include the construction of a new penthouse addition for an expansion of the site’s emergency power, diesel generator plant, bringing overall capacity to 8 MW, as well as the expansion of the site’s adiabatic dry-cooler plant, which supports 1,500 tons of chiller capacity. A number of challenges were successfully navigated throughout the project, including: construction during Covid, working near existing in-use critical services, and navigating a busy downtown Vancouver environment with multiple crane lifts throughout the project. Sustainable elements were an important part of the project and included a diesel emissions-reduction system and the use of energy efficient equipment. Company: TELUS reconstruct the corridor while replacing aging underground infrastructure and modernizing the downtown public realm. The team redesigned water, sanitary, and storm utility systems, undergrounded existing BC Hydro power poles, and engineered complete roadway reconstruction incorporating widened sidewalks, raised crossings, decorative paving, lighting, and landscape upgrades. Aplin Martin also resolved complex grading constraints between buildings constructed at varying elevations. Businesses and the public were central to construction planning, with phased staging, access management, and continuous coordination implemented to maintain storefront access, pedestrian circulation, and downtown activity throughout delivery.
