SQUAMISH CENTRAL ESTUARY RESTORATION PROJECT (PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2)

The Squamish Central Estuary Restoration Project, led by the Squamish River Watershed Society, in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Squamish Nation, is a multi-phase initiative restoring over 300 ha of vital salmon habitat where the Squamish River meets Howe Sound, as well as improving long-term restoration of the area. Key elements of the overall program consist of 4 significant culvert upgrades at strategic locations, 3 culvert removals, and lowering an 800-m section of the Squamish River training berm to enhance fish passage and connectivity with the adjacent estuary. The work enhances fish passage, supports long-term ecological renewal, and strengthens the resilience of this environmentally significant region. Early monitoring shows immediate increases in fish movement, demonstrating the project’s effectiveness and projected long-term ecological benefits. Company: WSP Canada Inc.
