GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: How Organizational Practices Can Lead Change

CLIMATE CHANGE ADVISORY GROUP AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

C onsider this: a typical BC resident might generate 3 to 10 tonnes of CO 2 per year at work. While this number may seem insignificant, multiplied by 30,000 engineers and geoscientists the number becomes 90 to 300 kilotonnes per year. This is equivalent to removing around 30,000 to 90,000 cars from the road each year. As concerns about climate change grow, meaningful climate action has captured the corporate imagination and organizations are beginning to embrace it through developing ‘net-zero’ or ‘carbon neutral’

goals. Having these goals is an effective way to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions created every time professionals go to work.

“In support of our Greenest City 2020 goals, the City overhauled its printer fleet moving to less devices and more energy efficient models. Since the 2015 launch, the City has saved 22,214.8 KgCO 2 .” Connie Zelter, Director, IT Workforce Technology, Technology Services, City of Vancouver
