APEGBC Continuing Professional Development Personal Investment. Professional Commitment.

Call for Presenters Are you an expert in your eld who would like to contribute to the future of engineering and geoscience? APEGBC is actively seeking members to present on a variety of topics. For more information, please visit www.apeg.bc.ca/prodev/events.html. APEGBC Online Learning Centre The Online Learning Centre features audio recordings of previously held APEGBC seminars, synchronized with presentation slides. New sessions will be added throughout the year. Visit www.apeg.bc.ca/cpdonlinelearning/ for a complete listing of sessions available. and suppliers. It provides project managers with a good understanding and the practical implications of the legal precedents and improves the ability to make better decisions. Legal cases and disputes situations will be reviewed and discussed with participants. Project Claims and Disputes and Team Building on Engineering and Construction Projects September 25, 2014 – Richmond, BC The morning session will focus on contract claims and disputes. This session discusses the causes and types of claims, the procedures by owners and contractors to avoid claims and methods to quantify and resolve claims. The afternoon session will focus on team- building and partnering. This session attempts to create an environment where trust and teamwork prevent disputes, foster a cooperative bond to everyone’s benefit and facilitate the completion of a successful project. From Good to Great: Advanced Communication “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”George Bernard Shaw Business professionals like engineers, geoscientists, lawyers, doctors and accountants all have their own “ese.”When you speak or write legalese or engineering- ese your colleagues know what you are talking about. But, when it comes to communicating day to day, how effective a communicator are you really? Contract Administration and Contractual Issues for Engineering and Construction Projects September 26, 2014 – Richmond, BC This module will cover legal and contractual issues related to the effective management and administra- tion of construction projects. It focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the project managers to contractors Skills Workshop for Professionals September 26, 2014 – Vancouver, BC

Seismic Analysis and Design of Steel and Reinforced Concrete Buildings September 17-19, 2014 – Richmond, BC The seminar begins with the basics of hydraulic theory as it applies to sewer collection modelling and then takes participants through the sanitary sewer data model. Both steady-state and extended-period simula- tions will be presented in this seminar. Sewer load allocation and model calibration will be discussed. Hydraulic Modelling of Sanitary Sewer Collection Systems September 18, 2014 – Richmond, BC This course provides an opportunity to learn the basic principles and practices of analysis and design of earth- quake-resistant design building structures. Static and dynamic analysis of buildings using advanced computer codes is presented. The course covers seismic design and detailing of steel and reinforced concrete buildings. The modelling task and application of software tools are becoming more and more common in modern engineering practices. Modelling results can help opti- mization and refinement of a design before the physical prototype is built and minimizes the time duration of design process. In addition, application of modelling could help minimizing the final cost of a prototype or a product. In this seminar participants will learn about multiphysics modelling principles and applications through hands-on use of COMSOL® software and some of its modules. Introduction - A Team Approach to Project Management September 23, 2014 – Prince George, BC Successful projects result from good time and cost management and effective, motivated teams. Both are achieved by using a team approach to planning and managing projects. This one-day introductory workshop provides hands-on experience with some key processes that can be immediately transferable to engineering projects at work. Open Channel Hydraulics September 24, 2014 – Vancouver, BC The main objectives of this course are to build on the audiences’background and experiences: 1) an understanding of engineering of hydraulic systems; 2) developing skills in advanced mathematical modelling of both natural and engineered hydraulic systems; 3) incorporating these analytical attributes into planning and design of hydraulic systems; and 4) employing representative examples and cases. Multiphysics Modelling for Engineers September 19, 2014 – Vancouver, BC

Geostatistics and Resource Estimation August 6 & 7, 2014 – Vancouver, BC

This seminar is largely aimed at the practice of geosta- tistics for mineral resource modelling. Geostatistical theory will be presented, along with practical tools to facilitate decision-making during model construction. The anticipated course topics include exploratory data analysis, declustering, variogram analysis, change of support, resource estimation methods and model validation. The scope of this seminar will be limited to resource estimation. Comprehensive Digital Protection of Generators August 11 & 12, 2014 – Vancouver, BC The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a foundational understanding of commonly used relaying elements in generation protection and their corresponding coordination with other relaying elements. Polysilicon Technologies, Product, Markets and After attending the seminar, the participants will be able to obtain a broad idea of polysilicon technologies to gain knowledge of the applications of polysilicon in the solar industry. Foundation Design August 18-20, 2014 – Richmond, BC This short course should be of interest to geotechnical engineers, structural engineers and civil engineers who wish to have a better understanding of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations. All key concepts and terminology will be explained and emphasis will be placed on the practical application of the information provided. Stormwater Modelling – A Hands-on Demonstration September 10, 2014 – Vancouver, BC This seminar will be a hands-on demonstration of the US-EPA SWMM 5 computer model and its application in an urban setting. This seminar will provide a demon- stration of a project from initial set-up through detailed design of the drainage system. Evaluation and Management of Pavement Infrastructure September 15 & 16, 2014 – Richmond, BC This course will discuss pavement design, specifica- tion, subgrade preparation, base/sub base and surface types and function, construction details, and long term functional and structural performance considerations to ensure a long-life and effective product. Solar Industry Process Stages August 15, 2014 – Burnaby, BC
