2O18 ♦ 2O19 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

SALTON ROAD PEDESTRIAN/CYCLE BRIDGE Salton Road Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge, an almost-80-metre steel arch structure, was constructed in the median on Highway 1 in Abbotsford, BC, and lifted into place in October 2018. Delivered by Graham Infrastructure and Associated Engineering under a design-build contract, the bridge opened in January 2019. This bridge integrates the community with the University of the Fraser Valley Campus and connects neighborhoods, and improves mobility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing Highway 1. Participants: Aiden Connel, Manjot Toor, EIT, Conor Casey, P.Eng. (Graham Infrastructure). Nancy En, Nikola Cuperlovic, P.Eng., Andy Chan, P.Eng., Jason Dowling, P.Eng. (Associated Engineering). Jenny Moro, Shirlyn Liao, David Harvey, P.Eng., Marc C. Bossé, P.Eng. (Thurber Engineering), Julian Vasquez, P.Eng., (PBX Engineering). Jan Loots, P.Eng., Nathan Koning, P.Eng., Rob Isaac, P.Eng. (City of Abbotsford).

AZAMBI HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT The 11-megawatt Azambi Hydroelectric Project is located in a remote area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kibali Gold Mine has developed the project to reduce its reliance on diesel power generation at one of the largest gold mining operations in Africa. Knight Piésold worked closely with Kibali Mine to develop a purpose-built, low-impact, and cost-effective hydroelectric project that produces 64 gigawatt-hours of renewable, reliable electricity each year. The project reduces the mine’s overall energy cost by approximately 75 percent compared to diesel. A portion of the mine’s power grid capacity is provided for free to local communities, reducing their reliance on deforestation for energy supply. The project will ultimately become a legacy asset for future generations long after mining ceases. Project Owner: Barrick Gold Corporation. Primary engineering consultant: Knight Piésold. Participants: Egbert Scherman, P.Eng., Marko Barisic, P.Eng., Benoit Otis, P.Eng., SamMottram, P.Eng., Rob Adams, P.Eng., Katrina Wechselberger, P.Eng, David Levi, P.Eng.

CARGILL POWER SYSTEM UPGRADE PROJECT As part of the distribution upgrade project and Port of Vancouver’s sustainability initiative, Lex Engineering Ltd. designed an indoor 69-kilovolt substation for Cargill’s grain terminal in North Vancouver that replaced the original 1960s-era equipment. The substation steps down transmission voltage to a level suitable for power distribution in the plant. Due to limited real estate and requirements for personnel safety and reduced maintenance, the single-storey building combines such features as 72.5-kilovolt gas-insulated switchgear, biodegradable liquid-filled transformers and connectorized cables, and surge arresters eliminating any exposed energized parts. To further increase operational safety, extensive arc flash-sensing and arc-resistant equipment, as well as remote control and IEC61850 provisions are built into the design. Project owner: Cargill Limited: Ron Ludwig, P.Eng., Ramzy Farrag, P.Eng. (PEO). Lex Engineering Ltd.: Nikolay Samoylenko, P.Eng., Paul Fuoco, Shane Schneider, P.Eng., RP Ghosh, P.Eng., Derek Hutchinson, P.Eng., Alexey Beskaravayny, P.Eng., Markus Vesik, George Mulder. PCL Construction: Julius Lee, CarlyWatson
