2O18 ♦ 2O19 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

GRAND PARIS EXPRESS (LINE 16-LOT 1) The Grand Paris Express metro expansion in Paris, France, is currently the largest transportation infrastructure project in Europe and is a critical part of Paris’ sustainability plan. The largest portion of work attributed to date is known as “mega lot” L16-01 and includes the construction of portions of four new metro lines (lines 14, 15, 16, and 17), 5 deep underground stations, 18 ancillary shafts, and 13 sequentially excavated adit tunnels—all in complex soft and saturated ground conditions. The project includes 20 kilometres of tunnels, excavated using 6 large-diameter tunnel boring machines, and approximately 1 million cubic metres of concrete. Detailed design and construction is being carried out by a consortium of EIFFAGE Génie civil, EIFFAGE Rail, EIFFAGE Métal, and TSO. Participant: Michael Mains, P.Eng., Design Lead/Manager (Tunnels)

CANREB – CANADIAN RARE-ISOTOPE FACILITY WITH ELECTRON BEAM ION SOURCE At TRIUMF, curiosity about how the universe was created is part of daily life—and the motivation for constructing CANREB, which will be used to prepare beams of radioactive isotopes from TRIUMF’s ISAC and ARIEL facilities for further acceleration. To achieve this, the continuous beam is bunched using the radio frequency quadrupole and the charge state of the ions is increased inside an electron beam ion source. All devices are joined by ultra-high vacuum beamlines for transport. The project is a result of a collaboration between engineers, physicists, technical specialists, and support staff.

Commissioning is ongoing; after successful tests this spring, CANREB is scheduled for its first radioactive beam this fall.
