KITSILANO COMMUNITY CENTRE HEAT RECOVERY Kitsilano Community Centre is a bustling recreational facility in Vancouver with an ice rink, gym, community spaces, whirlpool and tness centre. Prism Engineering led a recommissioning investigation and detailed energy study revealing measures to enhance HVAC e ciency, optimize operation, and recover waste heat. In 2017, the City of Vancouver enlisted Prism to conduct a detailed design and speci cation to integrate heat recovery chillers (ammonia plant heat recovery) to transfer heat from the ice plant to the building’s HVAC and domestic hot water systems. The new system was designed to be the primary heating system, with existing boilers recon gured to feed supplementary heating into the source side only, in the event heating load exceeds ice plant heat rejection. Commissioned in 2018, these measures have cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 90 percent and eliminated the need for natural gas to heat the facility. MUSKWA RIVER OUTFALL Designed for 25 megalitres per day of disinfected e uent from Fort Nelson’s wastewater treatment plant, and overcoming unique design and construction challenges, the 600-millimetre diameter high-density polyethylene replacement outfall runs within a 1,200-millimetre steel casing pipe from a land-based outfall chamber to a manifold 3 metres under the river bed. Muskwa River varies between a depth of 10 metres in summer and 500 millimetres in winter with ve-month ice cover. With operation and maintenance paramount, the design incorporates comprehensive inspection and clean-out features, and includes a real-time passive-sensing system that monitors all 12 di users. Features include simple-to-repair di user breakaway anges and modi ed TideFlex back ow valves to prevent manifold blockage. Construction was completed utilizing a 1200-millimetre-thick ice platform speci cally designed to support equipment for co erdam construction. Project Owner: Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. General Contractor: Kledo Construction. Design: Jurek Janota-Bzowski, P.Eng., Kia Zahrabi, P.Eng., Kerr Wood Leidal. Co erdam/Ice Platform: Andrew Forbes, P.Eng. (Forbes Industrial Contractors), Emily Cheung, P.Eng., Adel Alwaily, P.Eng. (DWB Consulting)
