PAST PRESIDENT HONOURED WITH NATIONAL GEOSCIENTIST AWARD With a lifetime dedicated to advancing research and public understanding of Earth sciences, Dr. John Clague’s, P.Geo., FGC, FEC (Hon.), contributions to the profession, technical community, and public are unparalleled. His passion for advancing our understanding of geoscience, as evidenced by his ongoing media presence during times of geological hazards, has helped highlight the profession at its best. When Geoscientists Canada announced the winner of the 2019 Canadian Professional Geoscientist Award, it came as no surprise to the local geoscience community that it was John. This year’s award recognizes his outstanding research in Quaternary geology and exemplary public communication of natural hazards. “Throughout his career, John has demonstrated excellence in the practice of his profession and dedication to the community in which he lives,” said Jeff Parks, P.Geo., FGC, President of Geoscientists Canada. “He has earned the respect of his peers, which is evident in the many accolades he has received throughout his career. He is the embodiment of what this national Canadian Professional Geoscientist award represents,” he said.

Passionate about protecting Canadians from the threat of natural disasters and climate change, John enjoys sharing his knowledge with the public to help increase public safety. His knack for conveying complex scientific information in clear and concise formats for diverse audiences makes him a worthy recipient. “Geoscience is key to understanding the amazing history and dynamism

of Planet Earth—our home,” John said. “I love to explain to adults and children how geoscientists solve environmental problems and find new resources. By doing so, they improve the quality of life for everyone,” he said. The 2019 Canadian Professional Geoscientist Award will be presented at the Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s President’s Awards Gala on Friday, October 18, 2019, as part of the 2019 Annual Conference.
