As a seismic specialist with more than 35 years of experience in the design and management of bridge and transportation structures projects, Don Kennedy has played a pivotal role in Canada’s development and adoption of performance-based seismic design methods and codes, most recently with Associated Engineering. His passion for bridge engineering is infectious and his leadership in improving seismic resilience in transportation infrastructure enhances public safety across the country. Over his three-decade long career, he has worked on seismic rehabilitation projects throughout BC, improving community seismic resilience. He has led or participated in the seismic rehabilitation of most major bridges in the Lower Mainland, a densely populated area of high seismic risk, including the Granville Street, Burrard, Oak Street, Knight Street, Ironworker’s Memorial Second Narrows, Cambie Street, and Mission Bridges. Early in his career, Don recognized a need to advance the BC bridge industry’s knowledge of seismic design. As a result, he introduced performance-based seismic design concepts into the BC Government’s bridge specifications and played a very influential role in their successful adoption in the province. His passion for seismic engineering and improving public safety continued throughout his career when he played a significant role in the creation of BC’s Earthquake Integrated Asset Management Plan. A visionary strategy that documents a framework for seismic preparedness considering earthquake recovery needs such as transportation networks, infrastructure, and health care facilities, all of which will improve community resilience. Don’s enthusiasm for his profession inspires technical excellence in his peers. He encourages and builds confidence in his colleagues, allowing them to compete nationally on major projects and position Associated Engineering as a leader in bridge engineering.
