Regardless of leadership, engagement with the impacted communities can make or break a project. “At the outset of each ministry project, the approach to community engagement is tailored based on the project’s scale, complexity, and level of public interest,” MOTT said. “Engagement with local governments, First Nations, and other interested parties follows a structured process that includes consultation opportunities, information sharing, feedback integration, and ongoing communication.” Outreach and engagement may involve community partner or advisory group meetings, public open houses, online surveys, dedicated project websites, informational bulletins and mailouts. These consultations are an opportunity to address neighbourhood concerns as well as gather important data to further refine, or completely re-shape, proposed plans. In his 40-year career in traffic and transportation engineering, Vlieg has attended a lot of public meetings discussing his proposed plans. One of the patterns he noticed in those engagement events has been that “everybody that has one of these plastic cards with their photo on it is an expert,” he said with a chuckle,
