Innovation Summer 2024

KICKING HORSE CANYON PHASE 4 PROJECT This design-build project upgraded 4.8 km of Trans-Canada Highway 1, near Golden, BC, to a 4-lane divided 100 km/h standard going through steep mountainous terrain, unstable slopes, and an environment subject to rockfall, avalanche, and debris flow hazards. The project reduced exposure to geotechnical and environmental hazards, improving safety and reliability. Rock cuts, excavations, ditching, grading, and bridge clearances were designed to protect critical infrastructure and the travelling public against hazards. Innovative features include: structures designed to either withstand or span over avalanche flows; ditches sized to contain rockfall, debris flow, and avalanche snow; rockfall attenuators for the most prone areas; stabilization of slide areas using excavation, dewatering, and anchoring to reduce slope loading; roadside and median barriers; improved geometrics and wider shoulders; landscaping and tree planting to reduce long-term erosion; and fencing to direct wildlife to landscaped passages under bridges.
