LNG CANADA FACILITY IN KITIMAT Working with its engineering, procurement, and construction contractor, the JGC-Fluor Joint Venture (JFJV), LNG Canada is building a world-leading liquified natural gas (LNG) facility in Kitimat, BC, in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. At peak construction in 2023, more than 8,700 skilled workers from across Canada were employed at the Kitimat site. To enable efficient construction execution, more than 200 modules totaling 250,000 tonnes were transported to Kitimat. This photo shows the final liquefication module for the second train being slid into its resting place. With construction moving safely and steadily towards completion, LNG Canada remains on track to deliver its first cargo in the next few years. RAISE BORE PIPELINE INSTALLATION THROUGH COASTAL MOUNTAINS Coastal GasLink’s 48-inch natural gas pipeline in BC faced terrain challenges and steep slope sections through the Coast Mountains, near Kitimat. Steep slope pipeline construction has unique challenges. To minimize the construction footprint and reduce the environmental impact, the project team implemented a trenchless raise bore method at Steep Slope 3. This method required a blend of mining and pipeline methods. The 122-m long, 60° raise bore was the first pipeline installation in Canada utilizing this method. The 108-tonne design load required a specialized 4:1 mechanical advantage lowering system for use with a 60-tonne capacity winch. Low- and high-strength grout backfill secured the pipe in place. The project’s success is an example of using innovative methods to reduce environmental impact while reducing construction efforts.
