KITSUMKALUM DOMESTIC WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS Associated Engineering’s team of engineers and hydrogeologists collaborated with Kitsumkalum I.R. No. 1, near Terrace, BC, to integrate local Indigenous knowledge into the design of the water system, establishing 2 new groundwater wells that are protected from future flooding events. Associated’s initial project scope was to replace Kitsumkalum’s water storage reservoirs. However, further consultation and investigations with water operators and Kitsumkalum community members revealed that the water treatment plant (WTP) and groundwater supply wells were located within a historical floodplain. Flood waters from a subsequent extreme weather event in 2022 inundated the groundwater well casings, shut down the WTP for approximately 20 hours, and resulted in a boil water advisory for the entire community. Associated recommended relocating the WTP to higher ground. The successive improvements to the water system provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water for the Kitsumkalum community.
