Innovation Summer 2025
ZERO-EMISSIONS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL ELECTRIC TRUCK Unilia (Canada) Fuel Cells Inc. delivered a zero emission Class 7 hydrogen fuel cell electric-hybrid truck in January 2025. Unilia altered a Peterbilt 220EV by adding a fuel-cell range-extender system. The vehicle was then commissioned and homologated for use in BC, meeting federal and provincial vehicle safety regulations. The truck has a validated 500-km range and plug-in capability for added flexibility, utilizing fuel cell technology developed in BC. It will operate in Greater Vancouver as part of the BC Hydrogen Pilot Truck Project, funded by the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions. Notably, heavy-duty vehicles account for approximately 60% of BC’s transportation related greenhouse gas emissions and 25% of total provincial emissions. This project provides a scalable pathway to significantly cut emissions in the sector, accelerating the adoption of clean energy technologies in real-world applications.
