the Nicomen Slough. Dewdney Bridge provides two-lane access from the Lower Mainland to Nicomen Island. The only other roadway access to Nicomen Island is provided by Deroche Bridge, located on Highway 7 approximately 10 km east of Dewdney Bridge. The new bridge is 185.7-m long and continuous over five spans. The steel I-girders taper in height at the approaches – an innovation that lowered the highway profile, increased infrastructure resiliency, and minimized impacts to the adjacent community. Site-specific challenges included a constrained site surrounded by private properties, interaction with two different dike authorities, liquefiable soils requiring ground improvements, and complex utility staging for existing hydro/power, gas, and water mains. COMPRESSOR SEAL GAS RECAPTURE SYSTEM UPGRADES To ensure the gas system maintains sufficient pressure as it delivers energy to homes and businesses in the province, FortisBC operates multiple compression facilities to repressurize gas in its system. The upgrade projects that were completed at the Eagle Mountain (Coquitlam) and Port Mellon facilities were among the first in Canada to implement a seal gas recapture system. This system employs a proprietary recompression technology to capture gas escaping from the dry gas seals on the compressors and reinject it back into the pipeline. While dry gas seal compressors already have lower carbon emissions than conventional wet seal technology, the new system further reduces fugitive emissions. Additionally, the system can be used to bring the facility to an unpressurized state for maintenance activities. These upgrades help lower carbon emissions and meet the regulatory requirements by applying innovative and practical engineering solutions. Company: FortisBC Energy Inc.
