Innovation Summer 2025
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS | 2024-2025
BATTERY ELECTRIC TUGS Robert Allan Ltd. created the design for three 23-m long battery-powered tugboats, two of which have introduced near zero-emissions ship-handling work to the Port of Vancouver with SAAM Towage Canada. The third operates in Türkiye. With 3,616-kWh Corvus Orca lithium-ion battery banks and charging from the local hydroelectric grid, the CO2 emis sion reductions from operating each of these tugs in lieu of traditional tugs is equivalent to removing approximately 300 cars off the road. Onboard noise levels are exceptionally low by virtue of the electric propulsion, and underwater radiated noise emissions are projected to be drastically reduced as well, providing significantly improved conditions aboard while reducing impact on the marine environment. Featuring ex ceptional thrust responsiveness and a hull form custom-de signed to maximize maneuverability, these battery electric tugs have proven to be major achievements of performance and decarbonization.
