Innovation Summer 2025
BURNABY FIRE HALL NO. 8 The City of Burnaby, in partnership with Simon Fraser University (SFU), built Fire Station 8 on Burnaby Mountain to enhance emergency response times and community safety. Construction, located on University Drive, began in 2023, with completion in late 2024 and full operation in early 2025. The city led the planning, design, and construction, while SFU provided the site at no cost. The federal government contributed $30 million. The 15,000-ft², 2-level facility will include 3 drive-through bays, a separated decontamination space, and seismic design meeting post-disaster standards. Additional features include an earthquake early monitoring system, Energy Step Code 3 compliance, and solar readiness for carbon-zero energy. This low-carbon, gas-free facility will have EV chargers for crews and emergency vehicles and will support Burnaby’s Climate Action Plan through stormwater management and an energy-efficient envelope to move toward net-zero energy.
