CALABOGIE HYDROELECTRIC GENERATING STATION REDEVELOPMENT

Built in 1917 on the Madawaska River in Ontario, the Calabogie Generating Station is one of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) oldest hydroelectrical generating stations. With increasing demand for green energy, OPG looked for opportunities to redevelop the site, ultimately choosing to construct a new station. The project was completed through an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model. AtkinsRéalis developed a project concept that doubled the station’s power output from 5 to 11 MW, reducing direct carbon emission and promoting sustainable energy. The annual energy production increased from 22 to 46.5 GWh/year by increasing the peak flow from 66 to 160 cm without deviating from the existing Water Management Plan. At a space-constrained site, the new facility consists of a shortened intake, a compact powerhouse, and a narrow tailrace deck. The powerhouse includes passages for eel migration, reflecting a commitment to environmental sustainability. Company: AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc.
